It seems like decades ago that I first met Wil Nix...wait, it has been decades. Suddenly I feel old, and I'm only on the second sentence of introducing my partner in geek to you. Well, age aside, our friendship has stood the test of time and here we are about to attempt to entertain you. But first, get to know the geek inside the man - I present to you Nix, geek. Tyra has asked me some questions and I have never been able to deny her. 1. What does self-identifying as a geek mean to you? How do you define geek? I identify myself as a geek because it takes the power from those would mean harm by the word. I am not easily offended or timid, but I do get irritated by those that use such a positive characteristic in such a negative tone. As for what does "geek" mean to me that is simple. Geek is just a vocal fan. A "geek" is no different than a sports fan, theater fan, etc. A "geek" is just better organized when it comes to locales to discuss. Geeks pioneered conventions, the internet, and other wondrous places to make havens for discussion. 2. When you get your "geek" on, what is your favorite way to do it?
Communication is my favorite way. I love a good debate, being a panelist at conventions, or just coming to lecture about pop culture, etc. I love having a discussion with my students about all aspects of geekdom. There are very few bad ideas (although some fan fics are trying to prove me wrong) and usually a fun place to just talk. Fandom is all make believe and it should be taken seriously as such (reddit aside). That's why I love being a geek. No matter how much we argue (again, reddit) seldom is anyone right. 3. What's your favorite fandom and why? This is a tough question. Current me would say Game of Thrones, but Star Wars has broken my heart and brought me laughter and tears for a lifetime. I am a cryer and The Last Jedi broke me. I am wanting to bill Disney over the therapy it has required. However, the joys brought by the franchise makes it worth every tear. 4. Tell me something interesting about you that most people don't know. The answer depends on the audience. I am pretty much an open book. Most don't know that I am a high school dropout and just like being a geek, I am not ashamed. I never took the SAT, but still got full rides to the colleges I attended. My path was different and it helped shape who I am today. I also love a good chick flick (Bridget Jones, Hope Floats, etc). That's enough about me, but I want to share what my reflections on so much. Stay tuned and stay entertained :)
