I met Tyra back in the day. I will not specify what day (She is violent and will hit me, if I insinuate age) because it was more a moment than just a singular memory. She was a friend of a friend at the time, but we just clicked from then and the rest is geek history!
1. When did you become "geek" aware?
I have to say I was a late bloomer in terms of realizing I was a geek. I didn't buy my first set of dice until I was in my thirties and was doing marketing work on an RPG called Deliria. I was a geek long before that, I just didn't know it. I was going to sci-fi/fantasy conventions, belonged to a Star Trek fan club, but the light bulb never quite went off.
2. What is your favorite fandom?
I can't pick just one! Harry Potter is one I'm diving into more because I still love the characters, but Star Wars is and has always been a constant. I've probably been more focused on Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher's legend lately. And game-wise - it's World of Warcraft. I'm loving the new expansion and trying to catch up on all the lore.
3. How have you made your "geek" work for you?
I'm a professor - which is one of the most geeky professions, even if I'm in the business college. I teach social media, and I'm all about pop-culture and looking at how it impacts marketing. So, my geek is working quite well. I'm 'that professor' with pink hair that does PVP with a holy priest. I don't think anyone has ever excused me of being normal.
4. In all things "geek" what has broke your heart? (Wil: I think I know the answer)
Carrie Fisher passing away. I think a lot of us didn't understand how much we identified with this iconic character of Leia and with Carrie. Carrie did. I read an article recently about how protective she was about Leia's character. I worry now that she isn't here to watch over that legacy because, in all honesty, I'm not a fan of the last Star Wars movie. Besides Carrie, Anthony Bourdain's death made me stop and think. I believe both of them are iconic, strong figures who shared their souls with us and fought - for better or worse - their demons every day.
That's enough about me - for now. Let's get our geek on!
